In 13-5 loss, Braun moves to 3rd all-time in hits, while Brewers look to bring Gio back

In a 13-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, Ryan Braun moved to third all-time in hits for the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 35-year-old tied Cecil Cooper with a home run in the fifth inning and passed him with a single in the ninth, going 2-for-4.

Paul Molitor is second with 2,281 and Robin Yount is pretty untouchable on top of the list with 3,142 hits.

Braun would likely need to play into his 40s to pass Molitor. He’ll need to play into his 50s to pass Yount. Maybe his 60s.

In each of the last two seasons, Braun finished with 103 hits. Part of that is durability. He hasn’t played more than 140 games in any of the last six seasons.

Before Monday’s game, the Brewers looked to bolster their pitching staff with a somewhat familiar face.

After the New York Yankees cut Gio Gonzalez on Monday, Milwaukee immediately showed interest in bringing him back, a source told Andy Martino of SNY.

The 33-year-old started five games for Milwaukee last season, going 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA. He had 22 strikeouts in 25.1 innings and pitched in relief in the postseason.

The New York Mets have also inquired about signing Gonzalez, a source told Yahoo Sports’ Matt Ehalt.
