Stalsberg strikes out 21 to put Viroqua in state championship

Viroqua goes for a WIAA Division 2 state baseball championship thanks to a record-setting performance this morning by left-hander Mitch Stalsberg.

The senior struck out 21 in 9 innings, two in the ninth, in leading the Blackhawks to 2-1 victory.

The Blackhawks (23-6) are playing Jefferson (27-3) at Fox Cities stadium for a state championship. The game is on FSN. Live stats are here.

The 21 strikeouts were an all divisions record. The old record was set back in 1958 by Eau Claire’s Hud Gelein.

Stalsberg set the Division 2 record of 18 in the eighth inning. He finished the game with just three walks.

Oh, if the pitching performance wasn’t enough, he also won the game with a RBI double in the top of the ninth.
